Itinerary

Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest Anniversary Pilgrimage

Day 1   MONDAY – Nov. 30

Evening departure from either Chicago (via Zurich) or Newark (NJ) on an overnight flight to Rome, Italy.

Day 2   TUESDAY – Dec. 1

Early afternoon arrival in Rome.  Transfer northeast to the Tuscan river town of Pontassieve on the medieval Renaissance Ring, a circle of towns surrounding Florence.  Check-in to the Hotel Moderno in the heart of Pontassieve.

Day 3   WEDNESDAY – Dec. 2

A day in Florence, a very beautiful city of ancient churches, monasteries, museums, galleries and palaces. Curving along the Arno River, Florence was the center of the Italian Renaissance during the 14th to 16th-centuries when art and literature flourished with the likes of Giotto and Dante. Visit the San Marco Museum, a former Dominican monastery decorated with frescoes of Fra Angelico, the ”Angelic Painter” of the early Renaissance.  Here one can see art in the very place for which it was intended.  This is also the monastery of Fra Savonarola, who like ”John the Baptist” lost his life in preaching the errors of his day. A cause for his sanctity was officially opened in 1997. The Piazza Annunziata is next with its 13th-century basilica enshrining a miraculous painting of the Annunciation which even Michelangelo thought was a divine piece of work!  Enter into Piazza del Duomo to see the Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore ( Virgin of the Flower), the masterpiece of the Renaissance with Brunelleschi’s innovative dome, Giotto’s belltower and Baptistry, the most ancient church in Florence.  Visit the Institute’s glorious Baroque Church of Saints Michael and Cajetan and enjoy time on your own.  Return to the Tuscan Hills for a visit to the motherhouse of Christ the King Sovereign Priest and the International Seminary of St. Philip Neri on Via Gricigliano in Pontassieve.

Day 4   THURSDAY – Dec. 3

Morning farewell to Tuscany as we drive south to Naples, the former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Naples, dating back to the 2nd millennium B.C.. Early afternoon arrival in Naples and visit to the Gesú Nuovo, a 16th-century church with a unique façade of diamond-shaped stones (commonly found in Toledo, Spain). This was the parish church of St. Giuseppe Moscati, the first modern-day medical doctor to be canonized. Working at the Incurables Hospital at the turn of the 20th-century, this holy doctor of Naples was the first to use insulin successfully on diabetics. Visit the Duomo di Napoli, a medieval cathedral built over the remains of a 4th-century basilica.  The Treasury enshrines a reliquary containing the skull of Naples patron saint, Januarius, and two vials of his blood that miraculously liquefy thrice-annually! Pass by the prestigious San Carlo Opera House, the oldest in Europe. Visit the recently aquired Convent and Novitiate House of the Sister Adorer’s of the Royal Heart of Jesus Christ Sovereign Priest, a community of religious sisters dedicated to praying for the priests of the Institute. Check-in at the Naples Starhotels Terminus in the city center.

Day 5 FRIDAY – Dec. 4

A day along the sparkling Amalfi Coast (Amalfitani) of the Tyrenhenian Sea, an area of exquisite landscape suspended between the sea and mountains, dotted with cliff-side villages, cultivated terraces, citrus groves and vineyards.  Our first stop will be for pictures at a point overlooking the famous village of Positano.  The town of Amalfi is next to visit its cathedral wherein is the tomb of St. Andrew the Apostle! The town of Ravello will be our last stop with its 12th-century white marble Baroque cathedral overlooking the sea 1150 feet below! Time at leisure in Ravello before returning to Naples for overnight.

Day 6  SATURDAY – Dec. 5

Today we depart for the once thriving Roman city of Pompeii, famous for its well-preserved ruins dating from the catostrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. when many of the cities inhabitants were buried alive. The Marian Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii founded by Blessed Bartolo Longo (a contemporary of Moscati) will be our first stop.  Next will be the opportunity to explore Pompeii’s vast archeological preserved site featuring excavated ruins of streets and houses. Ancient Rome, the Eternal City, is our final destination!  Upon our approach, we will stop at the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls (wherein are the chains that bound the Apostle St. Paul as a prisoner) before entering into the 3rd-century Aurelian Walls encircling the city’s seven hills. Our home in Rome will be at the Casa Brigida, just off the elegant Piazza Farnese in the heart of the historic city center.
